Matrec - Integrated Management of Residual Materials

Material Disposal

DISPOSE WITH RESPECT

Services Matrec and its divisions make every effort toward the reduction and recovery of residual materials. However, disposal remains inevitable for part of the materials. The company thus has infrastructures for offering its clients this capability.

RESIDUAL MATERIAL TRANSFER CENTRE
An important intermediate service

Material DisposalA transfer centre constitutes an intermediate stage between collection trucks and landfills. Trucks deposit their contents into landfills in an efficient manner, using trailers with a capacity of approximately 30 tonnes, which are then directed toward a certified engineered landfill.

Computerized facilities monitor the origin of loads, accurately measure volumes in transit, and produce detailed reports for all types of clientele.

A transfer station constitutes a valuable asset for reducing costs related to transportation and sanitary operations for the clients.

The Matrec Transvick transfer centres, which are of recent construction, have been designed specially to ensure good collaboration with neighbouring companies and residents.

DRY DISPOSAL SITES

Material DisposalWhatever the location of a dry disposal site, Services Matrec and its divisions implement innovative measures to accurately identify the type of materials collected. The rigorous management policy of each site is known and appreciated by all stakeholders.

Whether it is located in the Eastern Townships, Mauricie or Montérégie, each dry disposal site complies with the standards of the Ministère du Développement durable, de l'Environnement et des Parcs.

Water quality studies are conducted regularly. They have always been conclusive, due to Matrec’s case management of its activities and rigorous selection of materials.

Specific site establishment and management measures illustrate the company’s will to anticipate coming regulations. Those measures have become the benchmark for studying the establishment of new sites and regulatory standards.

The recovery of dry materials, carried out by Services Matrec in most sites, further demonstrates this commitment to doing more.

ENGINEERED LANDFILLS

In its efforts to offer a wide-range of disposal services, Services Matrec is a co-owner, through the Laflèche Environnement company, of an engineered landfill near Ottawa, Ontario. The site is equipped with the latest environmental protection technologies. It is also an example of innovation in the use of cutting-edge disposal operations and partnerships with universities for research into new operating methods.

REUSING RESOURCES

The site, which has been in use since January 2001, handles non-hazardous residual waste. Many operational processes are used on site, including leachate circulation and water treatment using a complex natural system. Waste is not simply buried in the landfill, but rather we practice the 3Rs. Methane, which is recovered using a variety of techniques, is used to produce electricity. The heat and carbon dioxide coming from energy production is used to heat greenhouses and to enrich the atmosphere, treated water is used to irrigate reforested land and filters made up of peat, once saturated, will be used as raw material in the construction of the site’s next cell. We are also currently experimenting with shredded tires as a replacement for gravel. The site is a showcase for how natural resources can be used to their fullest potential.
